GOLFTEC announced the largest change to its lesson experience in late June. After more than 25 years and millions of evaluated swings, the company retired its Swing Evaluation — the product that started every student's improvement journey — and replaced it with something called a Game Evaluation. The Golf Wire reported the details: a new assessment that hits shots across the full bag, feeds OPTIMOTION 3D motion-capture and launch-monitor data through a predictive model built on millions of lessons, and produces an expected score.
Not a swing grade. A score.
"The Swing Evaluation helped millions of golfers start their improvement journey, and we're proud of what it accomplished," said CEO Joe Assell. "But the Game Evaluation is a generational leap forward. For the first time, we can show every player not just what their swing looks like, but what their game actually produces — what score their current skills predict, and exactly which improvements will make the biggest difference."
That last phrase carries the weight. The old evaluation watched one club in isolation and described what it saw — hand path, shoulder turn, hip tilt — in the language of mechanics. The new one hits driver, approach shots, wedges, and scoring situations across multiple stations while OPTIMOTION collects 4,000 data points per swing, then maps the results to a predicted scoring outcome. Assessment Analytics separate what a player does well from what costs them strokes and show, in real time, how each skill contributes to the final number.
The product change contains a quiet admission: the swing, by itself, could not answer the question golfers were actually asking. That question was never "what does my backswing look like." It was "what is my game producing, and which part should I fix first."
Arccos's data confirms the same conclusion from a different direction entirely. The company published its 2026 Driving Distance Report in May, drawing on more than five million rounds and nearly ten million driver tee shots recorded during the 2025 calendar year — the largest on-course amateur dataset ever assembled. The headline number is blunt: average driving distance for amateur men was 224.0 yards in 2018. In 2025, it was 224.1. Less than one yard of movement across eight years of equipment launches, shaft fittings, and swing tips.
Women's averages moved in the wrong direction. The average female drive fell from 179.2 yards to 175.7 — a loss of 3.5 yards over the same period.
MyGolfSpy's analysis of the report added context that makes the stagnation harder to explain away. Skill, not age, is the single largest variable in how far an amateur hits a driver: a scratch golfer in their 60s hits it farther than a 30-handicap in their 20s. The handicap spectrum accounts for 63 yards at any given age. And the highest-handicap players face a recovery or penalty situation on 45 percent of their tee shots, compared to 12 percent for low-handicap golfers.
The gap is not in the swing. It is in what happens after it.
That is the conclusion GOLFTEC's data led them to, and the reason a swing evaluation that only saw one station had to go. A golfer hitting driver into a net produces a number — ball speed, launch angle, spin rate — and none of those numbers alone reveal whether the shot would have scored. The approach from 165 yards matters. The wedge from 85 matters. The decision that left either distance matters more than the strike that followed it. GOLFTEC's old format could not see any of that.
The shift matters because most amateur practice still runs backward. The range is built around the driver bay. The fitting appointment starts with the longest club. The new purchase is, more often than not, a driver. Eight years of data across 25 million rounds says the driver is the club that moved the least. Meanwhile, Arccos's own research has found that approach-shot decision-making accounts for more than a third of all strokes lost by amateurs — the part of the game that never sees the range.
GOLFTEC is not a small operator making a philosophical point. It is the largest lesson company in the country, with more than 200 locations and a database drawn from millions of swings. When its model says the first question a student hears should be "what score do your current skills predict" rather than "let me see your swing," the rest of the instruction industry tends to follow.
