Green reading is on trial this year. The PGA Tour has moved pace-of-play averages onto public player profiles, sitting just below strokes gained, and rangefinders are in play for the first time as part of what the Tour has framed as an information-gathering season (MyGolfSpy). The LPGA went further and tightened its timing thresholds outright. Meanwhile AimPoint — feet on the slope, fingers held at arm's length — has become the visible defendant, with Lucas Glover among the players naming it as a cause of slow play, and Golf Digest cataloguing a fan reaction that stops just short of demanding a ban (Golf Digest).

Every version of this argument assumes the same premise: that reading a putt well is a real, learnable, separating skill, and the only question is how long a player should be allowed to spend acquiring it on a Thursday afternoon.

The research does not support the premise.

Eric Alpenfels and Dr. Bob Christina, working across roughly 1,300 putts, found that 96 percent of golfers under-read break by more than 60 percent — a putt that moves ten inches gets played as four. The number that ends the argument is what happened when they split the field by handicap. Better players read greens more accurately by about eight percent (Golf.com). Eight.

Tour putting coach Ralph Bauer arrived at the same wall from the other direction. Testing ten PGA Tour players, he found they under-read left-to-right putts by around 30 percent and right-to-left putts by around 15 (Golf Digest). These are men who putt for a living, on greens they have studied, and their eyes still lie to them in a consistent direction.

Set that against every other skill in golf, where the handicap gradient is brutal and obvious. Arccos, working from nearly ten million tracked drives, puts a scratch-to-4.9 player at 244 yards off the tee and a 30-plus handicap at 181 — a 63-yard spread that dwarfs the variation across every age group in the dataset (MyGolfSpy). Driving has a gradient. Approach play has a gradient. Green reading has almost none. A skill with no gradient between a scratch and a 25 cannot be the skill that separates them.

So the strokes are somewhere else, and the tracking data says where.

Shot Scope's three-putt study, run through MyGolfSpy, found that 83 percent of all three-putts begin with a first putt of more than 32 feet. A scratch golfer three-putts three percent of the time; a 25-handicap does it 13 percent of the time (MyGolfSpy). That is a fourfold gap, and it is not built out of misread break. It is built out of distance — how far the first putt is, and how close the second one ends up. The scratch player leaves 4.6 feet from long range. The 25-handicap leaves 7.8.

Which pushes the problem off the green entirely. First-putt distance is an approach number wearing a putting costume, and we have written about the shape of that miss before: the August 7 briefing covered the finding that four in five missed greens are missed short, by players holding the correct yardage the whole time. Come up fifteen yards short with a 7-iron, chip to 35 feet, and the break on that putt is the least of what just happened. The three-putt was created two shots earlier.

There is an honest counter, and it deserves saying. Read accuracy matters more the shorter the putt gets, because inside ten feet the line is nearly the whole story and the margin for a bad read collapses. That is true. It is also circular: the reason a player is standing over a testing six-footer is that the previous putt finished six feet away, which is distance control, which is the thing the data already pointed at.

None of this makes AimPoint fraudulent or the pace debate pointless. Slow play is a real problem and worth solving. But the sport has picked the one putting variable that barely moves with skill and made it the centre of a season-long argument, while the variable that actually sorts a 3 from a 13 gets no airtime at all, because nobody can see it from a broadcast tower.
